Centrum invites artists to gain skills in encaustic painting with Seattle artist Willow Bader. Centrum is partnering with Port Townsend School of the Arts for the first time to create the new annual workshop, scheduled for November 1-4, 2018. Encaustic is an ancient style of painting that uses a mixture of hot beeswax, resin and pigment to create works that have dimension and vibrant color.

“I really take pleasure in sharing what I know,” Bader said of her passion for teaching. “It’s especially rewarding to watch students take on new concepts and run with them. Most people do not know it’s even possible to paint with encaustic. I like to open their eyes.”

The cost of the workshop is $800 and includes breakfast, lunch and dinner at Fort Worden State Park, where the workshop will take place. That cost does not include housing. For students who need lodging, the fort is offering a 15 percent discount on campus housing. Participants should contact the Fort directly to book a room at (360)-344-4400.

Encaustic participants can expect about 15 hours total of instruction over the course of three days and will take home two works on wooden boards. Artists do not need to bring their own supplies. Class size is limited to 16 artists aged 18 or older. Bader recommends students arrive with some drawing and painting experience. Even those with advanced encaustic skills will gain new knowledge from the one-on-one instruction Bader will provide.
