The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission has announced that the lower beach campground at Fort Worden State Park will be closed for approximately six weeks starting in October, while sewer improvements are made.
Remaining open throughout the construction phase will be 30 Fort Worden upper campsites and 40 reservable standard campsites at nearby Fort Townsend State Park. Advance reservations for Fort Townsend are detailed on-line.
All Fort Worden beach campsites, numbers 1 through 50, will be closed with anticipation of reopening November 17 and the comfort station in the lower beach campground will be closed through December 2010.
The sewer system improvement project includes construction of a new sewage lift station and a sewage collection system, to replace the existing system in the campground area. In addition, a new comfort station will be constructed in the area. Beach level restroom and comfort station building 501, located between the Cable House Canteen and the Marine Science Center’s Natural History Exhibit, will be open for use during this construction phase.
Funding appropriated on behalf of the Puget Sound Clean Water Funds will replace the beach campground’s lift and sewer system as well as replace the main camp loops comfort station.
