We’re really excited to have Meschiya Lake coming to Port Townsend this summer for Voice Works. This diminutive vocalist has a heart-shaped face with features that appear right out of a 19th-century daguerreotype, but for the dark-blue tattooed dots and diamonds that run along the curve of her eyebrows and the dimple in her chin. Her deep, full voice is as dark and rich as a liquor-filled bonbon — and powerful enough to stop one of the freight trains she used to hop as a traveling clown.
Dan Baum of The New Yorker writes:
"Meschiya Lake rocks back on her heels, lifts her chest, and opens her throat like an air raid siren to croon in a thrilling pre-microphone style that…can make you feel by turns as though you were shivering around a campfire in a railroad (yard) or drinking in a Budapest nightclub in 1938."
Her music was noted by NPR as one of the highlights of 2010; if you love singing in a classic fashion, we are sure that working with Meschiya at Voice Works will be a highlight for you as well. You can register online for Voice Works, or call us at 360-385-3102 for more information.
