About Chamber Music

May 26 - June 3, 2024

Since 1979, Centrum’s Chamber Music Series has brought some of the most talented musicians and their remarkable instruments to Port Townsend, WA. This year, for Centrum’s 50th anniversary, we featured four of the finest chamber ensembles performing today: the Ying, Dover, American, and Viano string quartets. In addition to presenting performances of the world’s top talents, nurturing the next generations of chamber musicians is central to our mission at Centrum through our weeklong Chamber Music Intensive.

Established in 2015, the Chamber Music Intensive fosters the highest level of training and coaching for pre-professional chamber musicians in community with leading faculty chamber artists. The Intensive serves outstanding emerging, pre-formed ensembles.

Through a digitally submitable audition process, two ensembles will be invited to a week of rigorous coaching with the world-renowned American String Quartet and Artistic Director Lucinda Carver.  The program is open to string quartets, piano + strings, or strings + wind ensembles.  Each participant is awarded a full scholarship including tuition, travel, accommodations, and meals. Participants will appear in a public masterclass and a performance. Each ensemble will be given a professionally recorded video of their performance for their own promotional use. Participants will also enjoy a demonstration by Ole Kanestrom, one of Port Townsend’s world-renowned bow makers, and a professional development session with the faculty.
