About Program
July 2025 - July 2026
This year-long, comprehensive novel writing workshop, led by New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Evison, provides an in-depth experience in developing your novel from draft to near completion. Beginning in July 2025 with a weeklong session at the Port Townsend Writers Conference, participants will dive into key elements of novel writing, exploring craft, narrative structure, character development, and thematic depth. Following this initial in-person gathering, the workshop continues with twice-monthly online meetings and monthly packet submissions, allowing for ongoing peer critique and guidance as you refine your story, structure, and style.
In addition to Jonathan Evison's mentorship, the course includes virtual guest sessions with acclaimed authors like Kristin Hannah (The Nightingale), Stewart O'Nan (Last Night at the Lobster), Jami Attenberg (The Middlesteins), Willy Vlautin (Lean on Pete), and Lidia Yuknavitch (The Chronology of Water). Developmental editor Jim Thomsen and a prominent literary agent (TBD) will also join to discuss the craft and industry aspects of novel writing.
The workshop culminates in July 2026 with a final weeklong retreat at the Port Townsend Writers Conference. During this closing session, participants will have the opportunity to complete their drafts, refine their projects, and discuss pathways for sharing their work with the world. This year-long experience is designed to immerse writers in a supportive community, providing the structure, feedback, and inspiration to bring their novels to life.

“Be prepared to set aside such aspirational ideals as inspiration. We will concentrate on the real key to writing a successful novel: the work. Think of this course as novel bootcamp. Here, along with craft, we will develop fortitude and discipline. We will demystify the art of novel-writing, roll up our sleeves and work our butts off, no excuses. We’re going to make time for our stories if they come out of our sleep. We’re going to hold one another accountable, but more importantly, hold ourselves accountable. Our objective for this twelve-month intensive is to get our novels as close to completion as possible. In doing so, we will hone our craft, distill our narrative and thematic vision for the work, develop wholly realized characters with fully developed dramatic arcs, ever aware of conflict, stakes, rhetorical persuasion, thematic cohesion, and all the elements of drama that make a novel sing. We will workshop our novels in an environment that is both respectful and demanding. Our goal is not merely to occupy the cultural space afforded the writer, but to become great writers, to push ourselves ever toward further growth and understanding as artists.”
