The 35 musicians who comprise the Jazz Port Townsend faculty each summer are a priceless resource. Artistic Director John Clayton hosts informal 90-minute sessions with some of them, talking about experiences, colleagues, mentors and musical heroes that have shaped them. Expect inspiring stories (and doubtless a few laughs) as they look at life through the open window that is Jazz.

Eric Dorfman in conversation with Knute Berger
Director of The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (NCMNS), Eric Dorfman joins Knute Berger to unveil the science, planning and the process of acquisitions for Dorfman’s former Museum’s (Carnegie Natural History Museum) upcoming 2021 exhibition, “Nature’s Rainbow,” illuminating diversity in gender and sexuality among fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals, including primates. In this talk, Eric will share how this diversity develops from the action of genes and hormones and how people come to differ from each other in all aspects of body and behavior.
2020 marked the launch of Centrum’s new arts and lectures series in partnership with KCTS 9 and Crosscut — Communiversity. The series was designed to inspire thought-provoking conversations highlighting a wide range of topics affecting our world. We have one fascinating event to finish the year, and you are warmly invited to participate in the discussion, which will be held exclusively online. Admission is $15 per household. Advance registration is required.
2020 Creative Aging Conference
The 2020 Creative Aging Conference – a partnership with the Frye Art Museum – will explore the topic of legacy, from the perspective of making a positive difference in an imperfect world. The conference will bring together speakers from multiple disciplines and life experiences, inspiring participants to consider what legacy means to them and how they can meaningfully shape the world left to future generations.
Select confirmed presenters includes keynote speaker Eddie Gonzalez, Engagement Manager, On Being Project; Sonnet Kekilia Coggins, Executive Director, The Merwin Conservancy (pictured); Tom Ikeda, Founding Executive Director, Densho; Carol Kummet, LICSW, MTS, Palliative Care Social Worker, University of Washington; Pam McCluskey, Curator of African and Oceanic Art, Seattle Art Museum; and Dr. Katie Schlenker D.O., UWMC Palliative Care Physician, University of Washington.

Like so many of you in this atypical year, we’ve made the Internet our new best friend and become a home for creative content, developed in community with artists and generative thinkers. Through podcasts and online gatherings we’ve served thousands of multigenerational learners. And we’re making plans for 2021 that expand our podcast and online gatherings and prepare for hybrid workshops that will blend online and in-person instruction and mentoring.
What we’ve described above will speed Centrum’s vision of a future where anyone from anywhere can nurture their creativity in an environment that is supportive, challenging and uplifting.
