Dear Friends,

These are both challenging and exciting times, and I want to thank all of you who are showing up in various ways for racial justice and our public health. I am looking both inward and towards our Black, Indigenous, Trans, and Femme Leaders of Color to understand where the work needs to be. Here at Centrum, we are having daily conversations about how to do this work and keep the fire burning. We know you are holding us accountable and we know we have a lot of work to do. Thank you for being here and for urging us forward.

Centrum Artist Residencies are making plans to resume in the Fall, when non-essential travel is able to safely resume. Centrum alumnx and community members have been engaging in a number of additional programs to stay connected during this critical time. On June 20, Centrum joined a global group of venues in hosting Hello World, a compilation of posts highlighting artists and projects all over the world. Our vitual meet-up program, Artist Cohorts is launching this month, with priority registration given to the Emerging Artist Alumnx and now open for public registration.  We are excited to pilot this community offering, and will maintain a wait-list for folks who want to participate in the future. Jurying for the 2020 Emerging Artist Residency is underway, with a special thanks to our jurors Kemi Adeyemi, Avantika Bawa, and Ben Gale-Schreck. Finalists will be announced in July 2020. Centrum Residencies will also be following up and spotlighting past and upcoming artists-in-residents through a new podcast On A.i.R., also scheduled to launch in July. Stay tuned!

What are Centrum Artist Cohorts? 

Somewhere in between a crit group, a reading group and a coffee date with your friends, Centrum Artist Cohorts are a way to gather, get feedback on your work and ideas, keep you company, and further your creative thinking during times of physical distancing. Taking place over eight weeks, facilitators will organize virtual meet-ups, space for sharing work and ideas, and guiding questions to move the group towards community and individual goals. What will residencies look like when they resume? 

We are working in consultation with guidelines from the CDC as well as local recommendations to ensure that social distancing and sanitation practices are ideal. Some of the changes will include new procedures for spacing out residencies so that units can be properly cleaned, new procedures for residents to implement in regards to kitchen and laundry uses, face coverings, and local food delivery options to take advantage of.

When will Centrum be accepting applications again? 

Currently we are booked for Fall/Winter 2020 and are doing final placements for Winter/Spring 2021. Many folks needed to be rescheduled, so our application windows have shifted considerably. We hope to open up applications for Fall 2021 in the coming months.
