Nathan Viner will present Songs Between Others: Jewish Visions of Appalachia. Though understudied if not unacknowledged, a meaningful connection between Jewish artists and Appalachian cultural tradition has developed over the past half-century. Jewish figures such as John Cohen, Art Rosenbaum, and many others have explored and adopted the historied traditions of the region through their work in music, film, visual art, and other forms. In this workshop, we will explore the stories of some of these artists and use their work as a means of seeing Appalachia through their eyes. We will also consider what causes lie behind this affinity, from social and political history to the musical modes of their liturgy.
