Centrum Artist in Residence Darsie Beck will exhibit his travel journal sketches and journals in the month of October at the Northwest Maritime Center. Join Beck for First Saturday Gallery Walk from 6 p.m. to 9 pm on October 3, 2015 at the Tretter Gallery in the Maritime Heritage Building, 431 Water St.
Beck will also offer a day-long workshop for those interested in learning new skills for enhancing their travel journal experience from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 14 at the Northwest Maritime Center. For more information, email darsiebeck@yahoo.com. Register online at darsiebeckartist.com.
Beck has been an annual resident at Centrum since 2004. He attributes the creative environment at Fort Worden State Park and nourishing support from Centrum staff as providing inspiration in many of his creative endeavors. In 2013, Beck published Discovering Your Essential Nature: The Art of Journaling to Greater Awareness and Personal Fulfillment, which he developed during residency.
This October, Beck will utilize his Centrum residency to catalog his most recent travel journal sketches in preparation for the introduction of a new book. In addition to authoring, Beck has developed a compact Field Easel Art Bag, which includes all the tools and materials needed for sketching in the field (the art bag is promoted by Urban Sketchers and can be purchased online).
Beck is a visual artist who makes his home on Vashon-Maury Island. He and his wife Christine, a production potter and photographer, work out of their home studio, Waterworks Studio. His creative impetus is derived from the maritime environment that encompasses the Puget Sound Region.
Beck has lectured and taught travel journal sketching workshops throughout the Northwest, including the Northwest Maritime Center, Rick Steves’ European Travel Program, Centrum at Fort Worden State Park and Washington State University, Pullman. He is an active member of the Tacoma Urban Sketchers Group as well as a co-administrator.
