Centrum Announces New Executive Director

PORT TOWNSEND, Wa. — Centrum is pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah Travis to the role of executive director to further the mission of Centrum, an internationally renowned creative arts nonprofit with programming in music, dance, writing and more. Travis, who will replace Robert Birman as he transitions to a new role within the organization, is expected to begin her new position in December.

Travis brings extensive arts nonprofit leadership experience. Most recently, she served as Executive Director of Ashkenaz Music & Dance in Berkeley, California, where she revitalized the 53-year-old organization, increased contributed and partnership revenue, and strengthened systems supporting more than 250 annual events and programs. Previously she led operations and strategic development and coordinated national advocacy efforts for Songwriters of North America (SONA), one of the music industry’s most influential songwriter rights organizations, and later co-founded its philanthropic arm.

Notably, Travis has a unique and enduring tie to Centrum. She is an avid fiddle player and dancer and has been attending Fiddle Tunes, one of Centrum’s core programs, since she was 12 years old. In her interviews with board and staff members Travis shared, “I was drawn to this opportunity because of the alignment with my personal values, my commitment to arts education and cultural exchange, and my desire to lead an organization that has international reach.”  She added her enthusiasm about living in the greater Port Townsend community, which she has been visiting for many years.

“We are thrilled to welcome Sarah Travis as our new Executive Director, said Centrum Board President Walter Parsons. With her experience, combined with a deep connection to Centrum and passion for our mission, we are confident she will lead our organization to even greater prominence and impact in the years ahead.”

Travis holds a BA in Political Science and Business Management from The Evergreen State College.

Centrum’s outgoing Executive Director Robert Birman, who has skillfully led the organization for the last 14 years, is transitioning into a newly created role focused on long-term capital fundraising and guiding multi-million-dollar projects at Fort Worden on behalf of Centrum, including future renovations to the Wheeler Theater and McCurdy Pavilion.

From renowned music workshops to hands-on youth art programs, Centrum’s campus at Fort Worden is a remarkable setting for creative discovery and learning. Through inter-generational immersive workshops, Centrum brings together aspiring and master artists to ignite creativity, find and provide mentorship, and build community.
