Centrum is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by visual artist Alessandro Teoldi. Fifteen years ago, Teoldi left his hometown of Milan, Italy for Vancouver, BC. That move trigged many questions about the overlaps of culture, inheritance, family and what it means to feel detached from one’s roots, navigating a foreign language in a foreign land. These questions have transformed into his work through an in-depth reflection on the process of collage. By cutting and pasting airplane blankets, linen, and paper, he reassigns meaning to these materials by re-contextualizing them within a new perspective.  

Located at one of the furthermost ends of the United States, Centrum’s geographical location speaks to Teoldi’s ongoing research into migration, distance, and the ties one has to one’s homeland. Fifteen years ago, while studying at the Emily Carr Institute in Vancouver, B.C., the physical landscape made a deep impression on him. Teoldi writes: “I am interested in how my relationship with that area has shifted over the past decade and in particular, how that will manifest in the work I will create and exhibit at Centrum. Every environment triggers new connections in us and being able to spend some time in a natural landscape will help me explore the possibilities that the natural world can play within my new series of work.” Join us in June to view a combination of Teoldi’s previous and newly created work. 

Alessandro Teoldi (b. 1987, Milan, Italy) received his MFA from Bard College - ICP in 2013. His practice encompasses textiles, sculpture, drawing and painting. He has exhibited his work at venues including 11 Rivington, NY; Marinaro, NY; Klaus Von Nichtssagend Gallery, NY; Suprainfinit Gallery, Bucharest; Galerie Derouillon, Paris; Palazzo Reale, Milan; Assembly Room, NY; Baxter St at The Camera Club of New York, New York; The Cabin, Los Angeles; International Center of Photography, New York amongst others. He was one of the 2018 residents at La Brea Artist Residency, Los Angeles, CA and a 2015 Workspace residents at Baxter St at The Camera Club of New York. Teoldi lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
