The Tennessee Hillbuddies

Fiddle Tunes

Biography

Tennessee
fiddle, banjo, guitar, singing

The Tennessee Hillbuddies like their stringband music in the traditional style: rhythmic, rowdy, and all but refined. They are about good music and good times, and their performances are known for causing hats to fly. The band is comprised of Henry Barnes, Conner Vlietstra, and Trevor Holder.

Henry Barnes, originally from Washington Courthouse, OH, is now residing in Carter County, TN. He’s known for taking the blue ribbon at many fiddle competitions and is recognized as a Master of Traditional Arts by the state of Ohio for his work introducing teenagers to the oldest living generation of Ohio musicians. Henry has a deep appreciation for the songs of the Appalachian region, and has collected and cataloged a significant repertoire of fiddle tunes and folk songs.

Conner Vlietstra is an old-time country and bluegrass musician from Chattanooga, Tennessee. That area, having a rich tradition of stringband music, had a profound influence on him. He comes from a musical family, and got some of his love for country music and bluegrass from his mother’s parents, Papa and Nana. Inspired by some of the great old time country singers like Riley Puckett and Charlie Monroe, he provides a solid foundation with his flattop guitar.

Originally from Ringgold, Georgia, Trevor Holder grew up playing the banjo at fiddlers’ conventions in the Southeast, winning many awards including first place at Galax in 2019. A fantastic Reno-style disciple, Trevor loves digging into early bluegrass and even pre-Scruggs banjo styles. Now, Trevor plays more than just bluegrass banjo, influenced by players like Uncle Dave Macon, Charlie Poole, and Gid Tanner.

The Tennessee Hillbuddies‘ contributions to American music have earned them numerous accolades and recognition, including ribbons, trophies, and even government grants. Their impact on the development of country and folk music is substantial, as their recordings and performances serve as a timeless reminder of the beauty and emotional depth that can be found in traditional music.
