For Parents & Guardians

Centrum’s programs for young artists are designed to accelerate artistic development and increase children’s critical and creative thinking skills. The model for our elementary and middle school programs is to have accomplished, professional artists and scientists, engaged in the most current cultural issues of our times, mentor young people in grades 5-9, as well as the adult chaperones (parents or teachers) who accompany them. Summer programs and our high school programs do not have the chaperone requirement. Students come on their own and are supervised by experienced staff.
Parent chaperones must complete a Centrum criminal background check unless this is already completed and cleared by the school.
Through a partnership with the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, also located at Fort Worden State Park, Centrum offers programs focused on the marine environment that integrate art and science. These programs provide hands-on experiences in real science labs and art studios, under the guidance of professional scientists and artists.
This process empowers students as they begin to define themselves both socially and artistically. Increased self-confidence encourages students to “be who they really are,” and in many cases be more than they thought they could be. Learning at Centrum is designed to encourage respect for individual viewpoints, traditions and beliefs.
We aim, as theater artist Erwin Thomas says, “To use transformative arts to make fearless human beings.”
Through contact with exceptional artists and scientists, the Centrum programs provide students with wider knowledge of the professional arts scene in their field of interest, or encourage a new interest in a field they haven’t known about before coming to Centrum.
Cell phones and electronic devices are not allowed at Centrum Youth Programs.
In case of emergency Centrum’s program manager and staff carry phones and will notify you as soon as possible. You may leave a message for your student at any time with Program Manager Alyssa deLeon. You will receive contact information in an email prior to the start of the program.
Centrum is a non-profit, artist-centered organization with a 40-year partnership with the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). The safety and comfort of your children is our highest priority. Meals at Fort Worden State Park are served on-campus at Fort Worden Commons. Students are housed in historic Fort buildings renovated as dormitories, and we provide experienced dorm counselors for supervision during non-teaching times.
