Centrum artist in residence John Hillmer returns to Fort Worden State Park with “Mystic Fish”, an exhibit of paintings and prints that ride several different waves.

First, the theme of music runs playfully through Hillmer’s work which has accompanied many jazz and blues artists in Port Townsend and beyond. His illustrations and designs have celebrated more than 50 music, literary, and community events across North America, including Northwest Folklife Festival, Earshot’s World Jazz Festival, and the Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival. His large stage murals have backed up many artists including Ray Charles, Keb’ Mo’, and Maya Angelou.

Second, Hillmer lives part of the year in Mexico, a country that he says “while not without its problems, is stunningly beautiful, graced with amazing art, culture, and history, and filled with kind and generous people.” Such south of the border color and energy make frequent appearances.

Finally, Mystic Fish is a call to action. And Hillmer reminds us that we need to protect these elements as they swim through the ocean and his art. The mysticism of water life are lively spirits in his works. Indeed, Mystic Fish suggests an ancient lesson—to deeply honor and be inspired by oceans, lakes, and rivers.

The Mystic Fish Exhibit will be located in the Building 205 Downstairs Studio at Fort Worden (Across from Madrona MindBody) and is open to the public 4-8pm Friday, September 7, 2018 and 1-5pm Saturday, September 8, 2018.
