The intimate Wheeler Theater is home to a rich celebration of Vintage Vocals on Saturday night, from Roots, to Jazz, and R&B, and beyond. The Vintage Vocals show presents 6 pairs of artists from Denmark, Canada, the American South, and the Pacific Northwest. Saturday’s performance is the final public concert for 2017’s Voice Works gathering.

COURTNEY GRANGER – LOUISIANA
Courtney lives in Lafayette, Louisiana, and he’s one of the most soulful singers on earth. A master fiddler as well, Courtney has always had a deep affinity for and knowledge of classic country music. His long-awaited first solo country debut recording has finally been released, Beneath Still Waters, featuring a master group of musicians and production by the renowned Dirk Powell.

LUKE BELL – TENNESSEE
Luke grew up in Wyoming, spending his summers on his grandparent’s ranch working from age 13 or so- lots of hot days, Randy Travis tapes, and old pick-up trucks with broken door handles. He dropped out of college and moved to Austin to play music full time. Now he’s living in Nashville making music, taking it one day at a time. He likes work, cowboy culture, just plain good songs, honky-tonks, New Orleans R&B, and his dog.

Jenny Lester and Karla Mundy – BRITISH COLUMBIA
Karla is a vibrant, soulful, and diverse vocalist, pianist, arranger and choir leader. She conducts three adult community choirs, leads harmony singing workshops and performs extensively throughout BC and Alberta. Jenny is blessed with a voice of sweetness, clarity, and power. She’s a dynamic bluegrass artist who has established herself as an important singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.

MAJA KJÆR JACOBSEN – DENMARK, and DAVID BOULANGER – QUÉBEC
A concert with Maja & David is a powerful performance of pure fearlessness, virtuosity and musical personality. They are known for their phenomenal presence on stage, with the ability to create an intense atmosphere around their music. With just two fiddles and two voices they present a well-matured musical unity between the music of Quebec and Denmark.

VALERIE MINDEL – VERMONT, and JOE NEWBERRY – NORTH CAROLINA
Joe grew up singing the old songs he learned from his family in the Ozarks. He’s known for his innovative banjo playing, and his white hat, and he’s a prizewinning guitarist and fiddler as well. Val Mindel is a longtime musician, teacher and workshop leader, known for bringing out the best in singers, whatever their level. Her specialty is the close, buzzy harmony that makes American old-time, bluegrass and country harmony so compelling.

GRACE LOVE – SEATTLE
Singer songwriter Grace Love is Seattle’s shining jewel of grit, beauty and power – think Etta James and Betty Wright meet Mahalia Jackson. She grew up in Tacoma, just a stone’s throw from Seattle, which infused her R&B melodies with fortitude and grunge. She was raised on soul music, southern food and stories about the south. She’ll be accompanied by Dan Tyack on steel guitar.

BECKY KILGORE – OREGON
Becky is one of America’s leading song stylists who finds particular delight in preserving and interpreting the music of the Great American Songbook. She regularly performs worldwide at jazz festivals, jazz parties, and on jazz cruises. She is a frequent guest on National Public Radio’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion, and with Michael Feinstein at Carnegie Hall. She’ll be accompanied by John Miller, one of the most respected acoustic musicians in the country.

PHARIS and JASON ROMERO – BRITISH COLUMBIA
Pharis and Jason hail from the little town of Horsefly in BC. When they’re not making banjos or babies, they sing vibrant duets and write deadly songs that sound so old that you’d think the composer is long gone. They’ve released three records as a duo, the third of which, A Wanderer I’ll Stay, earned the 2016 Juno for Traditional Roots Album of the Year.  Their heartbreakingly harmonic live show is an ever-evolving and never-ending quest for good songs and beautiful sounds.
