Literary adventures

Fort Worden is home to an impressive literary community. As the preeminent independent publisher of poetry, Copper Canyon Press  fosters the work of emerging, established, and world-renowned poets for an expanding audience.

In partnership with Centrum, Goddard College offers a low-residency MFA in Creative Writing at Fort Worden. Goddard
College’s low-residency programs are committed to self-directed
education. Students may choose to work in the areas of
poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, memoir, playwriting,
screenwriting, or cross genre.

The Centrum Writers’ Exchange is a year-round community hosting the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference, as well as smaller, focused, literary gatherings.

Crafts and visual arts

The Port Townsend School of Woodworking offers one, two, three, five and ten -day courses on woodworking, cabinet making, furniture making, historic preservation and traditional woodcrafts.

Corvidae Press is an association of artists who share an interest in printmaking and who support and manage a common non-toxic printmaking facility. Membership is based on an interest in printmaking and a commitment to the cooperative structure and spirit of the organization.

In partnership with Washington’s Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Centrum offers weeklong, residential experiences in the visual arts for students in grades 5-12.

Marine science

The Port Townsend Marine Science Center is an educational and scientific organization devoted to understanding and conserving our marine and shoreline environment. Through its various programs the PTMSC teaches respect for and stewardship of the myriad life forms in that environment, creates active and involving educational experiences for groups, offers professional development and curriculum design for teachers, and provides exhibits, programs, and publications featuring local marine and shoreline habitat, history, flora, and fauna;

Music and multi-disciplinary artist experiences

A founding partner at the Fort, Centrum provides arts workshops, artist residencies, and public performances. Centrum is a gathering place for artists of all ages, from all cultures, and in all phases of their development. Although programming happens year-round, students and visitors flock to Centrum in the summer for gatherings such as the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes, Jazz Port Townsend, and the Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival.

History

The Coast Artillery Museum was established to preserve and interpret
coast artillery history with special emphasis on the harbor defenses of
Puget Sound as they existed and functioned from the late 1800s to the
end of World War II. Among the collections and artifacts, visitors will
see a three-dimensional scale model of Battery Kinzie showing the
design and structure of the massive fortifications and the emplacements
for the two 12-inch disappearing guns that were kept in readiness for
possible attack from 1910 to 1943.

The Commanding Officer’s Quarters
is one of Fort Worden’s finest buildings. It was completed in April
1904, and many different families resided here. Located at the head of
Officers’ Row, the Commanding Officer’s Quarters overlooks Admiralty
Inlet, with Mt. Baker and the Cascades in the background. Late
Victorian and Edwardian furnishings provide a unique glimpse into the
life of a senior U. S. Army officer and his family in the first decade
of the 20th century.

Community education

Peninsula
College
has an extension site at Fort Worden, and provides local learning opportunities for students who reside in East Jefferson County.
