Centrum Presents
Centrum is thrilled to present meditation on: woven fishing ports, a new installation by visual artist ebere agwuncha, created as part of Centrum’s In the Making residency program.
A weaver with a deep personal connection to fishing through their mother’s roots in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, agwuncha explores the shared maritime history between Port Harcourt and Port Townsend—both communities shaped by the fishing industry, craft labor, and inherited knowledge. Through fishing nets, stories, and tactile engagement, agwuncha’s work honors the visible and invisible labor that sustains fishing ports and the people within them.
Visitors are encouraged to physically engage with the installation—examining knots, feeling the weight of the nets, and encountering the work through touch as well as observation.

About the Artist
ebere agwuncha is an Igbo-American artist and educator born and based in Chicago, IL. Their practice draws from archives, personal stories, collected ephemera, and researched collections to create functional objects, sculpture, and site-responsive installations rooted in cultural preservation. Working across fibers, ceramics, and woodworking, agwuncha employs traditional craft techniques including basket weaving, cane wrapping, jute fish netting, willow weaving, and more.
In summer 2025, agwuncha began facilitating “woven together,” a series of free basket weaving workshops celebrating ancestral memory through collective making.
Centrum’s residency programs and exhibitions are made possible through the generosity of Sally Warren & Jeff Jackson, Cathy Sarkowsky, Cat Clifford, The Chin Family Foundation, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and numerous granting agencies.
